Cutaneous findings of fulminant monkeypox in a patient with HIV/AIDS

Monkeypox, more recently mpox, is a poxviridae orthopoxvirus that reemerged as an international health emergency in 2022.¹ Since then, >30,000 cases have been reported in the United States.² Infected individuals typically present with prodromal fever and malaise followed by cutaneous findings after 1 to 5 days. Typical mpox lesions consist of a localized eruption of the anogenital skin and mucosa; however, reports have emerged of a disseminated form involving the trunk and extremities.³ These lesions present as painful papulovesicles to ulceronecrotic plaques.⁴ Preventative measures, such as vaccination, contact tracing, and isolation, limit spread among high-risk communities. Rare cases may require hospitalization in the setting of immunosuppression, such as inpatients with concomitant HIV/AIDS.
